German Shepherd Reunited With Family After More Than a Year Missing

A German Shepherd believed to have been missing for more than twelve months has been reunited with his family following an extraordinary recovery involving Missing Dog Support CIC and LUOSKO German Shepherd Dog Rescue.

The dog, Khan, disappeared in June 2025 and is believed to have survived alone in rural countryside for well over a year. During that time he was reportedly seen regularly by local people, who occasionally fed him and observed him sleeping around farm buildings and fields, but he was never successfully secured or reunited with his family.

The Breakthrough

The breakthrough came when Dawn Johnson, Founder of Missing Dog Support CIC, contacted LUOSKO German Shepherd Dog Rescue after hearing reports of a loose German Shepherd while attending an unrelated missing dog case nearby.

Knowing Khan would need specialist care if captured, Dawn contacted LUOSKO and asked whether the rescue would take him should she manage to safely secure him.

The answer was immediate.

“Absolutely,” said Adam Luosko, Co-Founder and Senior K9 Technician at LUOSKO German Shepherd Dog Rescue.

“When Dawn asked if we would help, there wasn't a moment's hesitation. If she could safely catch him, we'd make sure he was cared for, scanned for a microchip and that every effort was made to find his family.”

Over the following days Dawn began carefully studying the dog's movements. She spoke with local residents, attempted to gain permission to place wildlife cameras and a humane capture trap, and gradually built a picture of Khan's daily routine.

Despite some local scepticism — and being told by one farmer that she would “never catch him” — Dawn remained determined.

Unable to place cameras exactly where she wanted, she adapted her approach by positioning one beside a roadside.

It worked.

The footage confirmed the dog was following a regular route.

Safely Secured

Late on Monday evening, Dawn deployed a large humane trap, baited it and patiently waited. Right on schedule, Khan calmly entered the trap and was safely secured without injury.

He was immediately transported to LUOSKO Headquarters, where staff scanned him for a microchip. A microchip was found, but because the database operator was closed outside office hours, the registered details could not be accessed until the following morning.

When the database reopened on Tuesday, LUOSKO obtained the registration details. The microchip was registered under the name Sinbad. Using the registered information, Adam Luosko immediately set out to locate the owner.

Within a short time he found Katie Lovatt.

The news came as a complete shock.

After more than twelve months without any confirmed information, Katie and her daughter Maddie had almost given up hope of ever seeing Khan again.

A Promise Kept

What made the reunion even more poignant was the discovery that Katie had contacted LUOSKO on 5 June 2025, just one day after Khan disappeared.

Her message read:

“If someone hands him in or you hear anything, good or bad, please let me know. Our daughter is very upset.”

LUOSKO replied simply:

“Of course we'll keep an eye out.”

More than a year later, that promise was finally fulfilled.

Khan's Next Chapter

Although Khan appears to have survived remarkably well physically, his prolonged time living independently has understandably affected him emotionally. Since arriving at LUOSKO he has largely shut down while adapting to a completely different environment.

The rescue is now focusing on helping him regain his confidence before making any decisions about returning home.

“Our biggest concern now isn't whether Khan survived — we know he has,” Adam Luosko explained.

“The challenge is helping him remember the life he had before. Spending more than a year surviving alone changes a dog.”

“Over the coming days we'll be taking things slowly. Katie and her family will be visiting him, he'll be returning to his normal diet, and we're introducing familiar scents from home, including a blanket carrying the scent of one of his canine companions.”

“If Khan begins to relax and regain his confidence, we'll carefully work towards reintroducing him to both his family and the dogs he previously lived with, always at his pace and with his welfare as our priority.”

“Sadly, we also have to prepare for the possibility that life in the wild has changed him too much. If, despite everyone's best efforts, Khan cannot settle back into his old life, LUOSKO will stand by him and ensure he spends the rest of his days in a loving home where he'll receive all the care, comfort and security he deserves. Whatever happens next, he will never have to face the world alone again.”

Why Reporting Stray Dogs Matters

The organisations involved hope Khan's remarkable story also serves as an important reminder about the responsibility to report stray dogs.

“If you regularly see a loose dog, please report it to the appropriate authorities, dog wardens or rescue organisations,” Adam Luosko said.

“People often mean well by feeding a stray, but someone, somewhere, may be desperately searching for that dog. Had Khan been reported when he first appeared, there's every possibility he could have been reunited with his family within days instead of more than a year later.”

“The important thing today is that Katie and Maddie finally have the answer they've been waiting for. They know Khan is alive. They know he is safe. They know he is being cared for. Whatever happens next, the uncertainty is finally over.”

Working Together

Dawn Johnson said the recovery highlights what can be achieved when experienced volunteer search teams and specialist rescues work together.

Her work through Missing Dog Support CIC has helped reunite countless missing dogs with their families, and she has recently been recognised with a nomination for the BBC Make a Difference Awards in recognition of her dedication to animal welfare and the communities she supports.

Khan will remain under the care of LUOSKO German Shepherd Dog Rescue while his progress is carefully monitored and a gradual plan is developed in his best interests.
