WHY YOUR BAD DOG IS ACTUALLY VERY GOOD!!

YOUR DOG ISN'T NAUGHTY. THEY ARE DOING EXACTLY WHAT WORKS!

THE OVERSTIMULATION/ATTENTION CYCLE

  1. As the dog gets better and more obedient... Training gets less, therefore attention gets less.
  2. Dog gets bored and finds fun things to self reward — barking, digging, chewing.
  3. Owner goes to dog, touches dog, tells them off, uses the word 'NO' (for multiple things). Owner shouts — all this the dog thrives on, after all it's attention.
  4. As the dog got attention last time they re-do the behaviour over and over — owner sees bad dog. Dog sees attention. Rinse and repeat!

THE CYCLE CONTINUES UNTIL YOU BREAK IT

BREAK THE CYCLE — DO THIS INSTEAD

  • IGNORE: Don't give any attention to unwanted behaviour. No eye contact, no talking, no touching.
  • DISTRACT: Redirect your dog's attention to something more appropriate. Use movement, toys, or training.
  • TRAIN: Ask for a known behaviour (sit, down, touch etc.) to give your dog a job and reset their focus.
  • REWARD: Reward after the DISTRACT and appropriate behaviour to break the cycle and build good habits!

OWNER SEES: BAD DOG / DOG SEES: ATTENTION

NEVER SAY 'NO' YOUR DOG IS NOT TRYING TO BE BAD. THEY ARE TRYING TO GET IT RIGHT. HELP THEM SUCCEED!

BUILD RELATIONSHIP. PROVIDE STRUCTURE. TEACH. GUIDE. LEAD. THAT'S HOW GOOD DOGS ARE MADE.
