Healthy Weight and Body Condition
One target weight does not suit every German Shepherd. Body condition — how the dog looks and feels — is a far better guide than the number on the scales.
Why scale weight is not enough
Sex, frame, muscle, age, coat and line all influence scale weight. Long coats can conceal weight change, and "big boned" is not a clinical body-condition category.
What to check
Ribs should generally be readily felt under a light covering. A waist and abdominal tuck should usually be evident according to build. Excess body fat increases mechanical load; unexplained weight loss requires investigation, and growth should be monitored rather than maximised.
There is no single universal ideal adult German Shepherd weight. Use a recognised body-condition guide or your vet's assessment rather than a number.
